HalfStep

Transpose what's playing in the Music app, live, one semitone at a time.

Mac · macOS 14.2 or later · Coming to the App Store

About

HalfStep is a menu bar app for singers and players who practice along with recordings. When a song sits in the wrong key for your voice or your instrument, step the pitch up or down from the menu bar and keep playing. The Music app's audio is shifted as it plays, with nothing to import or export.

What it does

Shift pitch in semitone steps, up to an octave up or down
Works with the Music app, including tracks you've imported yourself
Lives in the menu bar, with no Dock icon or window to manage
Remembers your shift between launches
Quit HalfStep and the Music app keeps playing at its original pitch, without a gap

Privacy

HalfStep asks for permission to record system audio, which it needs to hear the Music app. Audio is processed in memory as it plays and is never saved or sent anywhere. HalfStep makes no network connections. Endogen LLC collects no data from HalfStep. See the privacy policy.
